15 February 2008 (via email)
I spent my entire Sabbatical Year (Feb. 2007-Feb. 2008) in the Mount of Olives Hotel, located on the top of the Mount of Olives right next door to the Chapel of the Ascension. The Mount of Olives is the exact place Jesus was last seen on this earth some 2,000 years ago, and the very place where he said he will return. In addition, almost all of the important sites are located within walking distance of the hotel (Bethany, Bethphage, the Pater Noster Church, Dominus Flevit, Gethsemane, etc.). The intriguing and persuasive theory that Jesus was crucified, died, and was buried on the western slope of the Mount of Olives, a short distance from the Mount of Olives Hotel (see the Secrets of Golgotha, 2nd Ed., 1996, by Ernest L. Martin) was one of the reasons I decided to stay the full year there. The Mount of Olives Hotel is family-owned, the rooms economical, the staff friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere relaxed and hospitable. For these reasons and those mentioned above, there is no better place for Christians to stay during their pilgrimages to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. Thomas F.
